Guide: Havapoo lifespan
Havapoo Lifespan and Health Problems: What to Expect
Havapoo lifespan is best estimated from the parent breeds, because no large study has tracked the mix itself. The American Kennel Club lists 14 to 16 years for the Havanese and 10 to 18 years for Miniature and Toy Poodles. So a well-bred, well-cared-for Havapoo can reasonably be expected to live into its teens.
What the parent breeds tell us about Havapoo lifespan
| Parent breed | AKC life expectancy |
|---|---|
| Havanese | 14 to 16 years |
| Miniature Poodle | 10 to 18 years |
| Toy Poodle | 10 to 18 years |
Small dogs tend to outlive large ones. For example, a 2024 study of more than 584,000 dogs in the UK found that life expectancy varies with body size, breed, sex and head shape (McMillan and colleagues). Both Havapoo parent breeds sit at the long-lived end of the AKC’s figures.
Health problems seen in the parent breeds
A Havapoo can inherit problems from either side. The AKC lists these for each parent breed.
- Havanese: eye disorders, deafness, heart murmurs, loose kneecaps (patellar luxation), Legg-Calve-Perthes disease of the hip joint and chondrodysplasia.
- Miniature and Toy Poodles: hip dysplasia, eye disorders such as progressive retinal atrophy and cataracts, epilepsy, von Willebrand’s disease and immune-mediated disorders. In addition, Legg-Calve-Perthes and loose kneecaps are more likely in the small Poodle varieties than in Standards.
Many dogs never develop any of these. However, knees and eyes deserve attention in any small Poodle mix, so ask what each parent has been checked for.
Does being a mix make a Havapoo healthier?
Not automatically. A 2024 UK study compared Cockapoos, Labradoodles and Cavapoos with their parent breeds across 57 common disorders. In about 87 percent of the comparisons, the crossbreeds were neither better nor worse off (Bryson and colleagues, PLOS One).
The study did not include Havapoos, but it tested the same idea. Therefore, the health of the two parents matters more than the word “mix”.
Health testing that supports a long Havapoo lifespan
According to the AKC, the Havanese Club of America recognizes dogs that pass four tests registered with the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals: a yearly eye exam, a hearing test, a hip X-ray and a knee check. Poodle breeders test for conditions such as progressive retinal atrophy as well.
Ask to see results for both parents by name. Our parent dogs have an Embark DNA health panel before breeding. See how we health test, and read what health testing before breeding should cover.
How to support a long Havapoo lifespan at home
- Keep your dog lean. The AKC warns that some Havanese gain weight easily, so measure meals and go easy on treats.
- Stay on schedule with the vet. Vaccines, parasite prevention and yearly exams catch problems early. See our puppy vaccine schedule.
- Look after knees. Because small joints are easy to injure, use ramps or steps for furniture and avoid big jumps.
- Start with healthy parents. Nothing you do later replaces good breeding.
