Guide: Havapoo grooming
Havapoo Grooming: Brushing, Haircuts and a Simple Schedule
Havapoo grooming comes down to three habits: brush to the skin several times a week, book a professional groom every four to six weeks, and keep eyes, ears and nails tidy in between. The coat sheds very little. However, it keeps growing, and it mats quickly when it is neglected.
Why Havapoo grooming takes commitment
Both parent coats are high maintenance. The American Kennel Club (AKC) says the long, silky Havanese coat needs daily grooming to stay free of mats, unless it is clipped short (AKC Havanese). Similarly, a Poodle in full coat must be brushed daily, right to the skin. Otherwise the hair mats near the roots and has to be shaved off (AKC Poodle).
The AKC scores shedding at 2 out of 5 for the Havanese and 1 out of 5 for the Poodle. In other words, the hair that does not fall on your floor stays in the coat, where it tangles.
A Havapoo grooming schedule
| Task | How often |
|---|---|
| Brush and comb to the skin | Daily for a long coat. Several times a week for a short clip. |
| Wipe the corners of the eyes | Daily, to limit tear stains |
| Check and wipe the ears | Weekly |
| Bath | As needed |
| Professional groom with nail trim | Every four to six weeks |
The eye, ear and bath advice comes from the AKC’s Havanese care notes. The four-to-six-week groomer interval is the AKC’s guidance for Poodles.
How to brush so mats do not form
- Work in sections. Part the hair and brush from the skin outward, one layer at a time.
- Follow with a comb. If the comb glides to the skin, the section is done. If it catches, you have found a tangle.
- Check the friction spots. Mats start behind the ears, under the collar, in the armpits and on the legs.
- Dry the coat fully. A damp coat tangles faster, so dry and brush after baths and wet walks.
When you find a mat, hold the hair at the skin and tease it apart from the tip. Do not pull. If mats cover large areas, a groomer will usually need to clip the coat short and start again.
Short clip or long coat?
Most pet owners choose a short trim, and the AKC notes the same for both parent breeds, because it cuts grooming time. A longer coat looks lovely, but it only works if you truly brush every day.
Either way, tell your groomer how much brushing you do at home. Then they can suggest a length you can keep up with.
Start Havapoo grooming while your puppy is young
Grooming is easier for a dog that learned it early. So, from the first week at home, handle paws, ears and face every day, and reward calm behavior. Run a soft brush over the coat even before it needs it.
Ask your groomer and your vet when to book the first visit, because many groomers want puppy vaccines finished first. Our puppy vaccine schedule shows the timing. For coat and allergy questions, see Are Havapoos hypoallergenic?
