Guide: are Havapoos easy to train

Are Havapoos Easy to Train? What to Expect

Are Havapoos easy to train? For the most part, yes. The American Kennel Club scores the Poodle 5 out of 5 and the Havanese 4 out of 5 for trainability, and both are eager to please. The two things that take patience are housetraining, which is slower in small dogs, and teaching a Havapoo to stay calm alone.

Are Havapoos easy to train? The parent breeds say yes

The American Kennel Club (AKC) describes the Havanese as highly intelligent, eager to please and easily trained, as long as you use only positive methods. It also notes that the breed is sensitive, so harsh scolding does harm.

The Poodle is described as extremely intelligent and easily trained. Poodles are people-oriented, and they respond quickly when training is fun and consistent. A Havapoo usually inherits a good share of both.

What Havapoos learn fastest

  • Basic cues. Sit, down and come usually arrive within the first weeks.
  • Tricks. The AKC calls Havanese natural trick dogs, and Poodles excel in obedience and agility.
  • Routines. Meal times, bedtime and the route of the daily walk are memorized quickly.

Because they learn so fast, they also learn what you did not mean to teach. For example, a puppy that is picked up every time it barks has learned to bark.

Where Havapoos are not so easy to train

  • Housetraining. Small dogs have small bladders, so accidents last longer than with a large breed. A schedule solves it. See our guide to potty training a small breed puppy.
  • Alone time. Havanese are not happy left alone for hours, according to the AKC. Therefore, practice short absences from the first week.
  • Barking. Both parent breeds score 4 out of 5 for barking. See Do Havapoos bark a lot?

Why reward-based training suits this mix

The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior recommends reward-based methods for all dog training. Its 2021 position statement says that punishment-based tools and corrections are not needed and that they raise the risk of fear, anxiety and stress (AVSAB).

That advice fits a sensitive dog especially well. So reward what you like with a treat, a toy or praise, and ignore or redirect what you do not like.

A simple training timeline

The AKC suggests this order (AKC):

AgeFocus
8 weeksName, sit, come, potty routine and crate
10 to 12 weeksDown, waiting politely for meals, first leash and harness practice
16 weeksPuppy class, leave it, walking on a loose leash
6 monthsPolite greetings, reliable recall and impulse control

Keep sessions to five or ten minutes, and always end on a success.

How to keep Havapoos easy to train

  1. Start on day one. Habits form immediately, so decide the house rules before the puppy arrives.
  2. Use the same words. Everyone in the family should use one cue for each behavior.
  3. Train before meals. A slightly hungry puppy works happily for part of its dinner.
  4. Add variety. New tricks and puzzle toys keep a clever dog engaged.
  5. Keep socializing. Our puppy socialization checklist covers the first weeks at home.
