Guide: do Havapoos bark a lot

Do Havapoos Bark a Lot? Causes and How to Stop It

Do Havapoos bark a lot? More than some small dogs, but usually for a reason. Both parent breeds score 4 out of 5 for barking in the American Kennel Club’s ratings, so expect a dog that announces visitors and noises. The good news is that Havapoos learn quickly, and a quiet cue is easy to teach.

Do Havapoos bark a lot? What the parent breeds tell us

The American Kennel Club (AKC) scores barking from 1, “only to alert”, to 5, “very vocal”. Both the Havanese and the Poodle score 4.

The AKC also describes Havanese as keen watchdogs that usually keep barking to a minimum. In other words, a Havapoo tends to bark at something, not at nothing. That makes the habit easier to manage.

Why Havapoos bark

According to the ASPCA and the AKC, dogs bark for a handful of reasons (ASPCA):

  • Alerting. Someone is at the door or passing the window.
  • Attention. Barking has worked before to get food, play or a cuddle.
  • Boredom. A clever dog with nothing to do makes noise.
  • Excitement or frustration. The leash appears, or a toy rolls under the sofa.
  • Fear. A new sound or a stranger worries the dog.

Before you train, work out which one you are dealing with, because the fix differs.

How to teach a quiet cue

The AKC describes a simple method (AKC):

  1. Wait for a pause in the barking, even a one-second pause.
  2. Reward that silence at once with a small treat.
  3. Gradually ask for a longer silence before the treat arrives.
  4. When you can predict the pause, say “quiet” just before it, then reward.

For doorbell barking, the ASPCA suggests allowing three or four barks, then asking for quiet. That way the dog still gets to do its job.

What not to do

  • Do not shout. The AKC points out that yelling sounds like joining in.
  • Do not reward barking. If barking gets attention, even a telling-off, it will continue.
  • Do not expect silence overnight. Consistency from everyone in the house matters more than any single session.

Do Havapoos bark a lot when left alone?

Some do. The AKC notes that Havanese are not happy left alone for hours, and a lonely dog may bark or whine. So build alone time gradually from the first week, starting with a few minutes.

If barking comes with panting, drooling or damage near doors, talk to your vet, because that pattern points to separation distress and not to bad manners.

Prevent barking before it starts

  • Exercise body and brain. A daily walk plus short training games takes the edge off.
  • Manage the view. If your dog barks at passers-by, block the lower part of the window.
  • Socialize early. A puppy that has heard many sounds reacts to fewer of them. See our puppy socialization checklist.
  • Reward calm. Notice and praise your dog when it stays quiet as someone walks past.
