Guide: Havapoo exercise needs
Havapoo Exercise Needs: How Much Is Enough?
Havapoo exercise needs are moderate. For most adult Havapoos, a brisk daily walk, some play and a few minutes of training are enough. The Havanese side is easy to satisfy, while the Poodle side adds energy and a strong need for mental work. Puppies need less than you might think.
Havapoo exercise needs: what the parent breeds tell us
The American Kennel Club (AKC) says the Havanese has moderate exercise needs. A brisk daily walk or a play session is enough, and romping indoors can count as well. It also warns owners never to over-exercise a Havanese. If the dog is panting and struggling to keep up, it is time to go home.
The Poodle is different. The AKC calls Poodles of every size very active dogs that need good exercise every day, and it scores their need for mental stimulation at 5 out of 5. So a Havapoo sits between the two.
How much exercise does an adult Havapoo need?
As a starting point, plan one or two walks a day plus some play, and then adjust to your dog. A Havapoo that takes after the Havanese may be satisfied with a short walk and a game on the rug. One that takes after the Poodle will ask for more.
Because Havapoos are small, most of this can happen close to home. That is one reason the mix suits apartments.
Meeting Havapoo exercise needs with brain games
Mental work tires a clever dog as well as a walk does. For example:
- Short training sessions. Five minutes of new tricks, two or three times a day.
- Fetch. The AKC notes that retrieving exercises a Poodle’s mind and body together.
- Food puzzles. Serve part of a meal in a puzzle feeder or scatter it in the grass.
- Hide and seek. Hide a toy, or yourself, and let the dog search.
Havapoo exercise needs for puppies
Puppies need short, gentle outings, because their bones are still growing. The AKC shares a common rule of thumb: about five minutes of walking for each month of age, once or twice a day (AKC). So a three-month-old gets about fifteen minutes.
In addition, avoid long runs and big jumps until growth is finished. Small breeds usually stop growing by 6 to 8 months. Until the vaccine series is complete, stay away from dog parks as well. Our puppy vaccine schedule shows the timing.
Signs you have the balance right
- Too little: restlessness, barking, chewing and attention-seeking in the evening.
- Too much: lagging behind, heavy panting, lying down on walks or stiffness afterward.
- About right: a dog that settles calmly at home and is keen, but not frantic, when the leash appears.
