Guide: are Havapoos good with kids

Are Havapoos Good With Kids? An Honest Answer

Are Havapoos good with kids? Usually yes. Both parent breeds score 5 out of 5 with young children in the American Kennel Club’s ratings, and Havapoos are playful and gentle. However, they are small dogs, so the bigger risk is a child hurting the puppy by accident. Supervision solves most problems.

Why Havapoos are good with kids

The American Kennel Club (AKC) rates both the Havanese and the Poodle at the top of its scale for three traits that matter in a family dog.

Good with young children55
Affectionate with family55

In addition, a Havapoo is small enough that it will not knock a toddler over, and clever enough to learn family routines quickly.

The honest caution: small dogs and small children

A Havapoo puppy may weigh only a few pounds. A fall from a child’s arms or a clumsy hug can injure it. A frightened puppy may also nip, because it has no other way to say stop.

For that reason, pediatricians and veterinarians give the same rule for every breed: never leave a young child alone with a dog, even a trusted family pet (American Academy of Pediatrics, AVMA).

House rules that keep kids and Havapoos safe

  1. Sit down to hold the puppy. Children hold a puppy only while sitting on the floor.
  2. Leave a resting dog alone. No touching while the dog eats, sleeps or chews a toy.
  3. Move calmly. Running and squealing excite a puppy and invite nipping.
  4. Skip rough games. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises against wrestling and tug-of-war between children and dogs.
  5. Give the dog a retreat. A crate or bed is the puppy’s own space, and children stay out of it.
  6. An adult watches. Active supervision lets you step in before trouble starts.

Jobs kids can do

Children bond with a dog by helping. With an adult nearby, a child can measure food, fill the water bowl, practice sit with a treat or brush the coat gently. Short training games are ideal, because Havapoos love attention and learn fast.

How we prepare puppies for family life

A puppy’s experience before it goes home matters. Ours are raised inside our family home, handled every day and introduced to children, household noise and new places. As a result, family life is already familiar on day one.

After that, keep the introductions going with our puppy socialization checklist. For more on personality, read Havapoo temperament.

Are Havapoos good with kids of every age?

  • Babies and toddlers: yes, with constant supervision, because the puppy is the fragile one.
  • School-age children: an excellent match. This is the age when children can follow rules and help with care.
  • Teenagers: a great training partner, and a good first lesson in responsibility.

If your home is very loud or very busy, also consider a sturdier dog. See Havapoo vs mini Goldendoodle.
