Goldendoodle Training: A Puppy Plan That Works

Goldendoodle training is easier than with most dogs, because both parent breeds score 5 out of 5 for trainability with the American Kennel Club. The real work is channeling a friendly, energetic puppy: teaching it to greet politely, walk on a loose leash and settle. So start the day your puppy comes home, and use rewards.

Why Goldendoodle training goes quickly

The American Kennel Club (AKC) describes Golden Retrievers as outgoing and eager to please, which makes them very easy to train. It describes Poodles as extremely intelligent and quick to respond when training is fun and consistent.

A Goldendoodle usually gets both: the wish to please and the brains to work out what you want. However, a clever dog also learns bad habits fast, so consistency matters.

A Goldendoodle training timeline

The AKC suggests this order for any puppy (AKC):

AgeFocus
8 weeksName, sit, come, potty routine and crate
10 to 12 weeksDown, waiting for meals, first leash and harness practice
16 weeksPuppy class, leave it, loose-leash walking
6 monthsPolite greetings, reliable recall, impulse control

Keep sessions to five or ten minutes, and finish on a success. For housetraining, see our potty training guide.

Three habits to teach first

  1. Sit to say hello. The AKC advises having puppies sit before anything they want. For a bouncy Goldendoodle, that means sitting before greetings, meals and play.
  2. Walk on a loose leash. Reward your puppy for being beside you. If the leash goes tight, stop, wait, and move again when it slackens.
  3. Settle on a mat. Reward calm lying down, so your dog learns that being quiet pays.

In addition, redirect mouthing to a toy every time. Our puppy teething timeline explains the biting stage.

Use rewards, not corrections

The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior recommends reward-based training for all dogs. Its 2021 position statement says corrections and tools that cause pain or fear are not needed, and that they raise the risk of anxiety and aggression (AVSAB).

Because Goldendoodles are so people-focused, praise, play and food all work as rewards. Therefore, you rarely need anything else.

Puppy classes and socialization

The AKC recommends puppy classes and early socialization for Goldens, and it suggests gently exposing a puppy to many people and places between seven weeks and four months. The same veterinary behavior society also supports classes before the vaccine series is finished, as long as the setting is clean and the puppies are healthy.

See our puppy socialization checklist and our puppy vaccine schedule.

Goldendoodle training through adolescence

Between about six months and two years, many Goldendoodles test the rules. A puppy that came when called may suddenly go deaf at the park. That is normal, and it passes.

So keep training short and fun, keep up the exercise, and go back a step when a cue falls apart. See Goldendoodle exercise needs and Goldendoodle temperament.
