Mini Goldendoodle vs Cavapoo: Which Is Right for You?
Mini Goldendoodle vs Cavapoo is a choice between a small retriever cross and a spaniel cross. A mini Goldendoodle typically weighs 26 to 35 pounds and needs daily exercise. A Cavapoo is smaller, because the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel weighs only 13 to 18 pounds, and it is usually calmer. On the Cavalier side, heart health is the big question to ask about.

Exercise and energy
The AKC says Golden Retrievers need plenty of daily exercise. In contrast, it describes the Cavalier as a dog that enjoys walks but is just as glad to stay on the sofa all day.
So a mini Goldendoodle suits a family that wants an active companion. A Cavapoo suits a quieter home. Both are half Poodle, which means both still need training and mental work.
Health: mini Goldendoodle vs Cavapoo
According to the AKC, Cavaliers are prone to mitral valve heart disease and to a neurological condition called syringomyelia, along with eye and knee problems. Therefore, ask what heart screening the Cavalier parent of any Cavapoo has had.
On the Goldendoodle side, ask about hips, elbows, eyes and heart. A 2024 UK study that included Cavapoos found that Poodle crosses were about as healthy as their parent breeds, no better and no worse (Bryson and colleagues). As a result, tested parents matter in both.
Coat and grooming
Both coats range from wavy to curly, and both need brushing to the skin and regular professional grooming. A mini Goldendoodle simply has more coat to brush. In addition, the Golden Retriever sheds heavily, so coat genes matter more in a Goldendoodle. See Goldendoodle coat types.
Family life
All three parent breeds score 5 out of 5 with young children in the AKC’s ratings. The practical difference is sturdiness. A mini Goldendoodle handles rough-and-tumble play better. A Cavapoo is lighter and gentler, which suits calmer children and older adults.

- Choose a Cavapoo if you want a smaller, calmer companion, and the breeder can show heart results for the Cavalier parent.
