Puppy Vomiting: Common Causes and When to Call the Vet
Puppy vomiting is common, and one episode in a bright, playful puppy is often minor. However, puppies dehydrate fast. Call your vet the same day if the vomiting repeats, if there is blood, or if it comes with diarrhea, lethargy or a refusal to eat.
Is it vomiting or regurgitation?
The two look alike, but they mean different things. The Merck Veterinary Manual defines vomiting as the forceful ejection of the contents of the stomach and upper small intestine, and it follows nausea, drooling, retching and abdominal contractions (Merck).
| Vomiting | Regurgitation | |
|---|---|---|
| Effort | Heaving, with abdominal contractions | Passive, with no warning |
| Before it happens | Drooling, lip licking, retching | Usually nothing |
| What comes up | Partly digested food, fluid or froth | Undigested food, often in a tube shape |
Tell your vet which one you saw, because the causes differ.
Common causes of puppy vomiting
VCA Animal Hospitals divides the causes into minor and serious (VCA).
- Minor causes: intestinal parasites, eating garbage or spoiled food, and food allergies. A sudden change of food and eating too fast belong here too.
- Serious causes: bacterial or viral infections, swallowed toxins, pancreatitis, a foreign object stuck in the gut, and liver or kidney disease.
In a young puppy, three causes deserve special attention. The first is parvovirus, covered in our guide to parvo in puppies. The second is worms in puppies. The third is a swallowed toy, sock or bone.
When puppy vomiting is an emergency
According to VCA, seek veterinary care right away if vomiting comes with any of these:
- Fever or lethargy
- Loss of appetite
- Abdominal pain
- Diarrhea
- Signs of dehydration
- Blood in the vomit
- A chance that the puppy swallowed something toxic or an object
In addition, treat any vomiting in a puppy that has not finished its vaccines as urgent. If you suspect a poison, do not wait for more signs. Our list of toxic foods for dogs names the usual culprits.
What to do at home after one episode
If your puppy vomits once and then acts normal, VCA describes the usual plan: your veterinarian may advise withholding food for a short time, and then feeding a bland, easily digested diet in small, frequent meals. Water should stay available. If things improve, the portions grow, and the normal diet returns over several days.
However, ask your vet before you withhold food from a small puppy. Toy and small-breed puppies can develop low blood sugar when they miss meals. See hypoglycemia in puppies for the signs.
Do not give human medicines. Many are dangerous for dogs.
Dehydration: why puppy vomiting gets serious quickly
Merck warns that extended vomiting can cause weakness, lethargy, weight loss, dehydration and an electrolyte imbalance. A puppy has little in reserve, so this happens sooner than in an adult dog.
Watch for dry or sticky gums, sunken eyes, low energy and skin that is slow to spring back when you lift it gently. If you see these, go to the vet.
What the vet may do
- Examine the puppy and ask about food, chewing habits and vaccines
- Test a stool sample for parasites, and test for parvovirus
- Take X-rays if a swallowed object is possible
- Give anti-nausea medicine
- Give fluids, under the skin or into a vein
VCA notes that a dog who seems well but keeps vomiting for more than one to two days still needs to be seen. For a puppy, we would not wait that long.
How to prevent puppy vomiting
- Change foods gradually, over about a week.
- Feed measured meals on a routine. See our puppy feeding schedule.
- Use a slow feeder if your puppy gulps food.
- Keep trash, socks and small toys out of reach. Our puppy proofing guide goes room by room.
- Stay on schedule with deworming and vaccines.
