Guide: distemper in puppies
Distemper in Puppies: Signs, Spread and the Vaccine That Prevents It
Distemper in puppies is a contagious viral disease that attacks the lungs, the gut and the nervous system. There is no cure, and care is supportive only. The good news is that the standard puppy vaccine series prevents it, so finishing those shots on time is the whole plan.
What distemper is
How distemper in puppies spreads
Merck says infection passes mainly through airborne droplets from infected animals. In other words, it spreads through coughs and sneezes, much like a cold. The AKC adds two more routes: direct contact with an infected animal or object, and from a mother to her puppies through the placenta.
Two facts make the virus hard to avoid:
- Infected dogs can shed it for months. Both Merck and the AKC say shedding can last several months.
- Wildlife carries it. Raccoons, foxes and skunks can catch and spread distemper.
Signs of distemper in puppies
A fever usually appears three to six days after infection, although owners often miss it. The first sign people notice is usually a watery to pus-like discharge from the eyes.
| Stage | Typical signs |
|---|---|
| Early | Eye discharge, fever, clear nasal discharge, loss of appetite |
| As it progresses | Lethargy, coughing, vomiting, diarrhea |
| Nervous system | Muscle twitching, head tilt, circling, seizures, paralysis |
Merck describes seizures that look like the dog is chewing gum. It also notes that the body-wide illness may run for as little as 10 days, while nervous system signs can be delayed for several weeks or months.
The early signs overlap with kennel cough in puppies and parvo in puppies. So do not try to tell them apart at home. Call your vet.
Lasting effects in dogs that survive
Dogs that live through distemper are often marked by it. Merck and the AKC describe:
- Hard pad disease. The paw pads and nose thicken and harden.
- Damaged tooth enamel on teeth that had not yet come in.
- Permanent nervous system damage. VCA Animal Hospitals says recovered dogs are often left with muscle twitches and recurring seizures (VCA).
How distemper is treated
There is no drug that kills the virus. Merck calls supportive care the mainstay of treatment. According to VCA, that means a hospital stay with intensive nursing, intravenous fluids, treatment for the vomiting, diarrhea and cough, and anti-seizure medicine in some cases. Antibiotics help only with secondary bacterial infections.
VCA describes the disease as incurable and often fatal. That is why prevention carries so much weight.
The vaccine that prevents distemper in puppies
The distemper vaccine is part of the routine combination shot, often written as DHPP or DAPP. The exact dates are set by your veterinarian.
| Source | Puppy schedule |
|---|---|
| VCA | Vaccines at 8, 12 and 16 weeks of age |
| Merck | A first dose at 6 weeks, repeated every 3 to 4 weeks until 16 weeks old |
After the puppy series, VCA says dogs need boosters every one or three years, depending on the vaccine used. Our puppy vaccine schedule shows how this fits with the other shots.
The series matters because of the mother’s antibodies. They protect a young puppy at first, but they can also block a vaccine. Nobody can tell exactly when they fade in a given puppy, so the shots are repeated until 16 weeks.
Keeping a puppy safe before the series is done
- Keep every vaccine appointment, with no gaps.
- Avoid dog parks, pet store floors and unknown dogs until your vet clears your puppy.
- Socialize in safer ways. Our guide on when puppies can go outside explains how.
- Keep wildlife away from food and water bowls, and secure the trash.
- Ask the breeder for the vaccine record. A careful breeder gives the first shot before a puppy goes home and hands you the paperwork.
