Hypoglycemia in Puppies: Signs and Emergency Steps for Small Breeds
Hypoglycemia in puppies means low blood sugar, and it is a real risk for toy and very small breeds. A tiny puppy cannot store much energy. So a missed meal, a stressful day or a burst of hard play can leave it weak and wobbly. If that happens, rub a little corn syrup or honey on the gums and call a vet at once.
Why hypoglycemia in puppies happens
The body stores spare sugar in the liver and muscles. The American Kennel Club (AKC) explains that very young, very small puppies have little fat or muscle and an immature liver, so they cannot store enough (AKC). When the supply runs out, the brain is the first organ to suffer.
Common triggers include:
- A missed or late meal
- Stress, such as travel or a new home
- Long or rough play
- Getting cold
- Vomiting, diarrhea or parasites
Signs to watch for
- Unusual sleepiness, or a puppy that is hard to wake
- Weakness and a wobbly walk
- Trembling or muscle twitching
- Confusion, or a glassy stare
- Collapse or seizures in severe cases
These signs can appear within minutes. Therefore, treat any sudden dullness in a toy-sized puppy as an emergency.
What to do in an emergency
- Rub corn syrup or honey on the gums. The AKC notes that sugar is absorbed through the gums, so do not pour liquid into the back of the mouth.
- Keep the puppy warm. Wrap it in a towel against your body.
- Call your vet, and go. A puppy that has perked up still needs to be seen, because severe low blood sugar can only be reversed with glucose given by a vet.
Keep a small bottle of corn syrup in the house and in the travel bag. Then you are never searching for one.
Preventing hypoglycemia in puppies
- Feed small meals often. The AKC suggests four to five meals a day for toy puppies under four months.
- Use a calorie-dense puppy food made for small breeds.
- Do not skip breakfast before a car ride or a flight.
- Break up play with rest and a snack.
- Skip sugary treats as a routine. VCA Animal Hospitals warns that simple sugars send blood sugar up and then crashing down (VCA).
- Treat stomach upsets early. See puppy diarrhea.
Our puppy feeding schedule shows the meals by age.
Which puppies are most at risk of hypoglycemia?
According to the AKC, toy puppies are most at risk between 6 and 12 weeks of age, and the danger can last until about 7 months. That includes the smallest puppies in a Havapoo litter, especially those from a Toy Poodle parent, and very small “micro” or petite doodles.
Larger puppies have more reserves, so the risk is much lower for a standard-size Goldendoodle.
When it keeps happening
One episode after a missed meal is usually just that. However, repeated episodes in a puppy that is eating well need a veterinary workup, because problems such as a liver shunt can cause low blood sugar too.
Every puppy from us goes home with a starter bag of its current food and a written care guide. Keep to that food and those meal times for the first week. See our new puppy checklist.
