Guide: are Goldendoodles good family dogs

Are Goldendoodles Good Family Dogs? An Honest Look

Are Goldendoodles good family dogs? For most active families, yes. Both parent breeds score 5 out of 5 with young children and for affection in the American Kennel Club’s ratings, and the breed standard demands a steady temperament. The catch is energy. A Goldendoodle needs daily exercise, training and company to be the dog families hope for.

Why Goldendoodles are good family dogs

The American Kennel Club (AKC) scores both parent breeds at the top of its scale on the traits families care about most.

In addition, the Goldendoodle Association of North America writes temperament into its breed standard. It asks for a dog that is reliable and stable around children and older people (GANA).

The challenges families should expect

  • Energy. A bored young Goldendoodle chews, digs and bounces off the walls. See Goldendoodle exercise needs.
  • Size and enthusiasm. A happy 40-pound adolescent can flatten a toddler without meaning to. Therefore, teach “sit to say hello” early.
  • Mouthing. Retrievers like to carry things, including sleeves. Redirect to toys.
  • Grooming. Most coats need brushing several times a week and a groomer every four to six weeks. See our Goldendoodle grooming guide.

House rules for children and dogs

Pediatricians and veterinarians give the same advice for every breed, however gentle (American Academy of Pediatrics, AVMA):

  1. Never leave a young child alone with a dog.
  2. Leave the dog alone while it eats, sleeps or chews.
  3. Skip wrestling and tug-of-war between children and the dog.
  4. Teach children to move calmly and to stroke, not hug.
  5. Give the dog a crate or bed that children stay out of.

Meanwhile, let children help. Measuring food, filling the water bowl and practicing tricks all build a bond.

Which Goldendoodles make good family dogs: mini or standard?

It depends on your household.

  • Petite and mini (under about 35 lb): easier with small children and in smaller homes, and less likely to knock anyone over.
  • Medium and standard (36 lb and up): sturdier for rough play with older children, and better partners for long hikes.

Size does not change personality. So choose the size that fits your space, then choose the parents with care. See Goldendoodle sizes and generations.

Are Goldendoodles good family dogs for first-time owners?

Yes, provided you have time. Goldendoodles forgive beginner mistakes, because they are so eager to please. However, they do not train or exercise themselves.

A puppy class, a daily routine and consistent rules make the difference. Read Goldendoodle temperament and our guide on how to choose a puppy breeder before you start.

How we raise puppies for family life

Our puppies are born and raised inside our family home, so children, visitors and household noise are part of their first weeks. We handle every puppy daily. As a result, family life is already familiar when a puppy goes home.

After that, it is your turn. Our puppy socialization checklist covers the first weeks.
