Guide: Havapoo vs mini Goldendoodle

Havapoo vs Mini Goldendoodle: Which Fits Your Home?

Havapoo vs mini Goldendoodle is mostly a question of size and exercise. A Havapoo usually weighs under 15 pounds and is content with a daily walk and some play. A mini Goldendoodle typically weighs 26 to 35 pounds, comes from a retriever, and needs more room and more activity.

Havapoo figures come from the American Kennel Club ranges for its parent breeds. Mini Goldendoodle sizes come from the Goldendoodle Association of North America (GANA).

Exercise: the mini Goldendoodle needs more

The American Kennel Club says Golden Retrievers need plenty of daily exercise and may misbehave without it. The Havanese, in contrast, has moderate needs that a brisk walk or a play session will meet.

Both mixes are half Poodle, and Poodles are active and clever. Still, the retriever side usually makes the mini Goldendoodle the dog that wants a longer walk, a game of fetch and a job to do. See Goldendoodle sizes and generations for how size varies.

Coat and shedding: Havapoo vs mini Goldendoodle

Golden Retrievers shed heavily, while Havanese shed little. Because of that, coat type varies more in Goldendoodles, and it depends on which genes a puppy inherits. Most Havapoos shed very little.

Both coats need brushing to the skin and a professional groom every four to six weeks. A bigger dog simply has more coat, so grooming a mini Goldendoodle takes longer and usually costs more. Neither mix is allergen-free. See Are Havapoos hypoallergenic?

Children and family life

All three parent breeds score 5 out of 5 with young children in the AKC’s ratings. The practical difference is size. A mini Goldendoodle is sturdier around energetic kids, but it can knock a toddler over. A Havapoo is gentle and light, but it is easier to hurt by accident.

Whichever you pick, supervise young children with any dog. Our guide to Havapoo temperament covers what the smaller mix is like at home.

Lifespan and health

Smaller dogs tend to live longer, and the parent breeds reflect that: the AKC lists 14 to 16 years for the Havanese and 10 to 12 for the Golden Retriever. Goldendoodle parents should be screened for hips, elbows, heart and eyes, as GANA requires of its members. Havapoo parents should be checked for eyes and knees in particular.

Ask any breeder for both parents’ results. See how we health test.

Havapoo vs mini Goldendoodle: which should you choose?

  • Choose a Havapoo if you want a lap-sized companion, live in a smaller space or prefer shorter walks.
  • Choose a mini Goldendoodle if you want a sturdier, more athletic dog and can give it daily exercise.

We raise both, so we are happy to talk through the difference. See our Havapoo puppies and Goldendoodle puppies.
