How Much Do Puppies Sleep? Hours by Age and a Nap Routine

How much do puppies sleep? A lot: usually 18 to 20 hours a day, according to the American Kennel Club. Young puppies play hard in short bursts and then nap for anything from 30 minutes to two hours. That sleep is when the brain, immune system and muscles develop. So a puppy that naps most of the day is normal, not lazy.

How much do puppies sleep at each age?

AgeTypical sleep
8 to 12 weeks18 to 20 hours a day, in many short naps
3 to 6 monthsSlightly less, with longer stretches at night
Adolescent and adultLess again, mostly at night with daytime naps

The 18 to 20 hour figure is from the American Kennel Club (AKC), which adds that a two-month-old is only truly active for four to six hours a day (AKC). VCA Animal Hospitals gives a similar range of 16 to 18 hours for young puppies.

Why puppies sleep so much

Growth happens during sleep. The AKC explains that sleep supports the development of the central nervous system, the brain, the immune system and the muscles. In addition, sleep is when a puppy’s brain files away what it learned that day.

Therefore, a well-rested puppy learns faster and bites less.

A simple nap routine

The AKC notes that puppies may nap every hour or so. A workable pattern for a young puppy looks like this:

  1. Wake up and go straight out to potty.
  2. Eat, play or train for a short while.
  3. Potty again.
  4. Nap in the crate or pen.

Then repeat. If your puppy turns wild in the evening, with biting and racing around, it is usually overtired. So try an earlier nap.

How long can a puppy sleep before a potty break?

Use the AKC’s rule of thumb: one hour for each month of age, plus one. For example, a three-month-old can sleep about four hours before it needs to go out.

That is why young puppies need a night-time trip. See our plan for the first night with a new puppy.

Helping a puppy settle

  • Give it a quiet place. A crate or pen away from foot traffic works best.
  • Let sleeping puppies lie. Teach children never to wake or pick up a sleeping puppy.
  • Keep a rhythm. Meals, play and naps at similar times each day.
  • Dim the evening. Lower the lights and noise in the hour before bed.

When to worry about how much puppies sleep

Long sleep is normal. Dullness while awake is not. Call your vet if a puppy is hard to rouse, uninterested in food or play, or also has vomiting or diarrhea.

Very small puppies can also become weak and wobbly from low blood sugar when they miss meals. Our puppy feeding schedule explains how to prevent that.
