Weaning Puppies: When It Starts and How It Works

Weaning puppies means moving them gradually from their mother’s milk to solid food. It starts when the first teeth appear, at about three to four weeks, and most puppies are fully weaned by around eight weeks. A puppy should be eating solid food confidently, on its own, well before it goes to a new home.

When weaning puppies begins

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), weaning begins naturally when puppies start to cut teeth, typically at three to four weeks of age (AKC). Sharp little teeth make nursing uncomfortable, so the mother starts to spend less time with the litter.

At the same time, the puppies become curious about her food bowl. That is the breeder’s cue to offer the first soft meals.

Weaning puppies week by week

AgeWhat the puppies eat
3 to 4 weeksA soupy gruel of puppy food and warm water, offered several times a day in a shallow dish. Milk from mom continues.
4 to 5 weeksThicker mush, with soaked and mashed kibble added
About 6 weeksSoaked kibble, with less nursing
8 to 9 weeksDry kibble, as the water is slowly reduced

VCA Animal Hospitals adds that by the time puppies are completely weaned, at about eight to ten weeks, they should be getting around four meals a day (VCA).

Why gradual weaning matters

  • Digestion. A slow change gives the gut time to adapt, so there is less diarrhea.
  • Behavior. The AKC notes that puppies cut off abruptly from nursing, for food and for comfort, can show insecure behavior later.
  • The mother. Her milk supply winds down gently, which is more comfortable for her.

For those reasons, the AKC says puppies should not go to new homes until they are happily eating on their own.

What to ask a breeder about weaning puppies

  1. When did the litter start solid food?
  2. Are all the puppies eating dry or soaked kibble without help?
  3. Which food are they on, and how many meals a day?
  4. Has any puppy had an upset stomach during weaning?

After weaning: feeding at home

Keep things the same for the first week. Every one of our puppies goes home with a starter bag of the food it is eating now, so there is no sudden change. If you want a different brand later, mix it in gradually over about a week.

Small-breed puppies need four or more small meals a day at first. Our puppy feeding schedule shows how that changes with age.

Where weaning fits in a puppy's first weeks

Weaning overlaps with the most important weeks for learning. While puppies are moving to solid food, they are also learning bite control from their littermates and meeting the wider world. See our guide to puppy development stages for the full timeline.
