Guide: hybrid vigor in dogs
Hybrid Vigor in Dogs: Are Mixed Breeds Really Healthier?
Hybrid vigor in dogs is the idea that crossing two breeds produces healthier puppies. There is some truth in it, because a cross lowers the chance of doubling up on a rare harmful gene. However, studies of real dogs show a modest effect at best. In the largest study of Poodle crosses, their health matched their parent breeds in about 87 percent of comparisons.
What hybrid vigor in dogs means
Many inherited diseases only appear when a puppy receives the same faulty gene from both parents. Dogs of one breed share ancestors, so they are more likely to carry the same faulty genes. When two unrelated breeds are crossed, the parents are less likely to match. That is the basis of hybrid vigor, which geneticists call heterosis.
The effect is strongest in a first cross. The Goldendoodle Association of North America notes it for first-generation dogs in particular.
What studies of hybrid vigor in dogs found
- 27,254 dogs, 24 disorders. For 13 disorders, including hip dysplasia, cancers and loose kneecaps, purebred and mixed-breed dogs were equally affected. Purebreds were more likely to have 10 disorders. Mixed breeds were more likely to have one, a torn knee ligament (Bellumori and colleagues).
- Doodles compared with their parents. In a study of Cockapoos, Labradoodles and Cavapoos, 86.6 percent of health comparisons showed no difference. The crosses did worse in 7 percent and better in 6.4 percent (Bryson and colleagues).
- A review of the evidence. In 2016, researchers found only three studies that measured true hybrid vigor in dogs. One of them found an eye condition was more common in Labrador and Poodle crosses than in the parent breeds (Nicholas and colleagues).
Why the effect is smaller than people expect
- Shared problems. Some conditions occur in both parent breeds. For example, hip dysplasia is found in Golden Retrievers and in Poodles, so a Goldendoodle can inherit it from either side.
- Later generations. When doodles are bred to doodles, or back to a Poodle, part of the first-cross advantage is lost.
- Not everything is recessive. Structure, weight and care affect health as well.
What actually predicts a healthy puppy
- Health tests on both parents. That means DNA tests and physical exams of hips, knees, eyes and heart. See health testing before breeding.
- How related the parents are. See our guide to the coefficient of inbreeding.
- What the relatives were like. Ask how long earlier generations lived, and what they died of.
- How the puppy is raised and fed. A lean puppy with good vet care starts ahead.
So is hybrid vigor in dogs a myth?
No, but it is oversold. A cross is not automatically healthier than a purebred, and it is not automatically less healthy either. As the authors of the doodle study put it, buyers would do better to choose on other factors.
Therefore, treat “hybrid vigor” in an advertisement as a slogan. Ask for test results instead.
