Guide: what age can puppies leave their mother
What Age Can Puppies Leave Their Mother? Why 8 Weeks Matters
What age can puppies leave their mother? Eight weeks is the accepted minimum, and some breeders of very small dogs wait a little longer. Before that, puppies are still learning bite control and social skills from their mother and littermates. Most U.S. states with a law on the subject also set the minimum sale age at eight weeks.
What age can puppies leave their mother, according to the experts?
The American Kennel Club (AKC) says that by eight weeks of age a puppy can usually handle going to a new home, and that puppies ideally stay with their mother and littermates until somewhere between seven and ten weeks (AKC). It also lists a minimum go-home age of eight weeks as a sign of a responsible breeder.
Some breeders of toy breeds keep puppies until 10 or 12 weeks, because very small puppies are more fragile.
What puppies learn between three and eight weeks
These weeks are a school that only the litter can provide. According to the AKC, puppies learn:
- Bite control. A littermate yelps and stops playing when a bite is too hard.
- Dog manners. The mother corrects pushy behavior.
- Impulse control. Waiting, sharing and settling down.
- Eating on their own. Weaning usually starts at three to five weeks and takes a couple of weeks.
A puppy should be eating solid food happily before it goes anywhere. See our guide to puppy development stages.
What happens when puppies leave their mother too early
The AKC reports that puppies separated too early are more likely to develop fearfulness, reactivity, aggression and difficulty with training. In addition, a puppy that missed its lessons in bite control often mouths harder and for longer.
So a seller offering a five- or six-week-old puppy is a red flag, whatever the reason given.
What age can puppies leave their mother by law?
There is no single national law for sales. However, about 28 states and Washington, D.C. have laws on the minimum age for selling puppies, and nearly all of them set it at eight weeks, according to the Animal Legal and Historical Center at Michigan State University (table of state laws).
Federal transport rules point the same way. A puppy must be at least eight weeks old and weaned before it is shipped by air.
Is later better?
Not necessarily. The first three months of life are the key window for socialization, according to the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior. A puppy kept longer by a breeder who introduces it to people, sounds and places is fine. One kept longer in a kennel with little contact is missing out.
Therefore, the right question is not only “how old?” but “what has the puppy been doing?” See our puppy socialization checklist.
When our puppies go home
Our puppies go home at about eight weeks. Before that, each one has a vet check, first vaccinations, deworming and a microchip, and it has spent its early weeks inside our family home with daily handling.
We list the expected go-home date with every litter we announce. See upcoming litters and our new puppy checklist for the first 48 hours.
