Guide: are Goldendoodles hypoallergenic
Are Goldendoodles Hypoallergenic? What the Research Says
Are Goldendoodles hypoallergenic? No. No dog is truly hypoallergenic, and studies that tested Labradoodles and Poodles found no less allergen than in other dogs. What is true is that many Goldendoodles shed very little, which keeps hair off the furniture. Whether your allergies tolerate one is something only time with the dog can tell you.
Are Goldendoodles hypoallergenic? The short answer
People react to proteins in a dog’s saliva, skin flakes and urine, not to the hair itself. Every dog makes those proteins. For that reason, the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology says no dog is truly allergen-free (AAAAI), and the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology agrees (ACAAI).
Are Goldendoodles hypoallergenic according to research?
No study has tested Goldendoodles on their own. However, two studies tested their closest relatives.
- Vredegoor and colleagues, 2012. Researchers measured the main dog allergen in coats and homes of Labradoodles, Poodles and other “hypoallergenic” breeds. Coat samples from those breeds held more allergen than samples from Labrador Retrievers, not less. Airborne levels in the homes did not differ by breed.
- Nicholas and colleagues, 2011. Dust from homes with “hypoallergenic” dogs contained as much dog allergen as dust from other homes.
Both studies also noted wide differences between individual dogs of the same breed.
Shedding is a separate question
Low shedding is real, even though low allergen is not. The Goldendoodle Association of North America explains that shedding depends mainly on a gene for “furnishings”, the longer facial hair most Goldendoodles have (GANA).
- Two copies of the gene: typically very little shedding
- One copy: somewhat more shedding
- No copies: a flatter coat that sheds like a Golden Retriever
So ask a breeder whether the parents have been coat tested. Less shed hair means less dander spread around the house, which is why some allergic owners do better with a furnished coat.
Why some allergic families still do well
- Dogs differ. One Goldendoodle may bother you while its littermate does not.
- People differ. An allergist can test which dog allergens you react to. One of them is made only by intact males, so some people react less to females and neutered males.
- Homes differ. Hard floors, air filters and a dog-free bedroom all lower exposure.
So, are Goldendoodles hypoallergenic enough for you?
The only reliable test is time with the dog.
- See an allergist first if anyone at home has asthma or a known dog allergy.
- Visit the puppy and its parents. Stay a while, handle the dogs and see how you feel that evening and the next day.
- Visit again if you can, because reactions can build with repeated exposure.

Living with a Goldendoodle and mild allergies
If testing goes well, the ACAAI suggests keeping the dog out of the bedroom, using HEPA air cleaners and vacuums, and choosing hard floors over carpet where possible. In addition, regular brushing and grooming keep loose hair under control. See our Goldendoodle grooming guide.
