Guide: Goldendoodle lifespan
Goldendoodle Lifespan and Health Problems to Know
Goldendoodle lifespan has not been measured in a large study, so the parent breeds are the best guide. The American Kennel Club lists 10 to 12 years for the Golden Retriever and 10 to 18 years for the Poodle. Because small dogs tend to outlive large ones, a mini Goldendoodle may land toward the longer end, although no one can promise it.
What the parent breeds tell us about Goldendoodle lifespan
| Parent breed | AKC life expectancy |
|---|---|
| Golden Retriever | 10 to 12 years |
| Standard Poodle | 10 to 18 years |
| Miniature Poodle | 10 to 18 years |
Body size matters as well. A 2024 study of more than 584,000 UK dogs found that life expectancy varies with body size, breed, sex and head shape (McMillan and colleagues). Therefore, a 30-pound Goldendoodle and a 70-pound one should not be expected to age the same way.
The Golden Retriever cancer question
Golden Retrievers have a well-known cancer risk. For that reason, the Morris Animal Foundation enrolled 3,044 Goldens in a lifetime study that tracks four cancers in particular: hemangiosarcoma, lymphoma, osteosarcoma and high-grade mast cell tumors (Labadie and colleagues).
Whether Goldendoodles share that risk has not been established. Still, it is a fair question to ask a breeder: what did the Golden side of this pedigree die of, and at what age?
Other health problems in the parent breeds
According to the AKC, breeders should screen for these conditions.
- Golden Retrievers: hip and elbow dysplasia, eye conditions such as juvenile cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy, and heart disease.
- Poodles: hip dysplasia, eye disorders, epilepsy, von Willebrand’s disease and immune-mediated disorders. Standard Poodles are also at risk of bloat.
In addition, floppy ears need regular checks for infection. See what health testing before breeding should cover.
Does being a doodle make a dog healthier?
Not automatically. A 2024 UK study compared Labradoodles, Cockapoos and Cavapoos with their parent breeds across 57 common disorders. In about 87 percent of comparisons, the crosses were neither better nor worse off (Bryson and colleagues).
As a result, the health of the two parents tells you far more than the word “doodle”.
Health testing that supports a long Goldendoodle lifespan
The Goldendoodle Association of North America requires its member breeders to test breeding dogs for hips, elbows, eyes, heart and knees, along with a set of DNA tests (GANA). Use that list as a yardstick with any breeder.
Our parent dogs have an Embark DNA health panel before breeding, and we are happy to talk through each dog’s results. See how we health test.
How to support a long Goldendoodle lifespan at home
- Keep your dog lean. Surgeons list low body weight as the most effective way to manage sore hips, and extra weight shortens lives.
- Grow puppies slowly. Overfeeding and rapid growth can worsen hip problems, according to Cornell University’s canine health center.
- Exercise every day. A fit dog holds muscle around its joints.
- Keep up with the vet. Yearly exams, vaccines and parasite prevention catch problems early. See our puppy vaccine schedule.
